TRACT 1 -- Do You Know Jesus?

Whoever meditates on history can find outstanding leaders throughout the ages who have influenced civilization and shaped their nations. One such person is Jesus, the Son of Mary. More than one-third of the world’s population follows his teachings. The name of Jesus is the most important word in the New Testament, appearing 975 times in its twenty-seven books.

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to the Virgin Mary. So too an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph, the husband of Mary, in a dream. They were told that the son conceived in Mary was of the Holy Spirit, and that they should name him “Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20-23; Luke 1:31).

This name was not man made, but fixed by the will of God. In the name “Jesus”, lies God’s plan for man’s redemption, a plan predetermined before the foundation of the world. The name of Jesus literally means, ”The Lord of the covenant helps and saves”.

God changed the course of the world through Jesus of Nazareth. The Son of Mary did not lecture vain human teachings, nor did he just perform material miracles, but through him, God spoke and worked (John 5:19-21; 14:10-24). What was the purpose of his coming? And what is the secret of his great power?

He frees us from pride

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest … learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29). All who struggle to control their lives are encouraged to come to Jesus. Anyone who comes to him, Jesus will deliver such a one from pride and will give him rest.

Jesus said, “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Those who follow Jesus are cured of selfishness and joyfully serve others in his strength.

He delivers from the wrath of God

The wrath of the Holy One abides upon all that have sinned, but Jesus delivers believers in him from any judgement at the Day of Resurrection (John 3:18; 5:24). The Lord revealed this truth to the prophet Isaiah, “Surely he has borne our grief and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, everyone, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:4-6).

Before Jesus died, he prayed to God interceding for his foes: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34). We are certain that God answered his merciful prayer.

He frees us from sin

Jesus said, “Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin … Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:34, 36). Jesus delivers those who trust him from the prison of sin. He took upon himself the sin of the world and atoned for us. His atonement blots out all our iniquities and his Holy Spirit dwells in us and strengthens us to overcome sin (Romans 8:9-11). So, he who believes in Jesus and his atonement will be justified fully.

He is the victor over the evil one

Jesus triumphed over Satan, standing firm against him and not yielding to his temptation (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13). Through adversity and affliction, Jesus continued to commit himself to God and remained sinless. The evil one could not exercise power over him. Jesus cast out demons and evil spirits from the demon-possessed. He granted this authority to his disciples (Luke 9:1). Whoever accepts his atonement will be completely freed from the power of Satan.

He is the Conqueror of death

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives (in spirit) and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26).

Jesus rose victorious from the dead, appeared in body and spoke to his disciples; they touched him. Likewise, Jesus is able to deliver his followers from death and give them everlasting life.

He is the Healer from hatred and revenge

Jesus commanded his listeners, “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:44-45; Luke 6:27-28).

The only one born of the spirit of God, forgave his followers all their sins and commanded them also to forgive all those who sinned against them. The motive of Jesus’ forgiveness is his great love. Jesus delivers all who obey him, from hatred and revenge.

The Son of Mary was rejected, snubbed and hated by his own people. But in spite of their rejection, Jesus offered them his love, reconciliation, redemption and power. All who turn from sin and turn to him will be justified and receive eternal life.

Dear reader,
The living Jesus invites you to trust him and accept his words. He can give you the power of the Holy Spirit and cleanse you spirit, soul and body. Do not harden your heart, but take advantage of his forgiveness and power and escape the wrath to come. Jesus is your Redeemer, Savior, Intercessor and Mediator before God. He is your life and guarantees your safety. Go ahead and put your hand in his stretched-out hand that you may receive grace upon grace of his fullness (John 1:16).

Thanksgiving Prayer
Pray with us: “Lord Jesus, you are the Savior of the world and my Savior too. You delivered me from God’s wrath and judgment. You saved me from my pride and selfishness. Cleanse me from my sins and grant me your pure life and heavenly righteousness, so that the evil one may not find power over me. Accept me as one of your followers and enlighten me to understand your teachings and commandments. Let your power dwell in my weakness, that I may glorify the holy God in my life. Amen.”
