MATTHEW - Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand!
A Bible Study Course on the Gospel of Christ according to Matthew
PART 5 - Christ's Suffering and Death (Matthew 26:1-27:66)

15. Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin (Matthew 26:57-68)

MATTHEW 26:65-68
65 Then the high priest tore his clothing, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Behold, now you have heard his blasphemy. 66 What do you think?” They answered, “He is worthy of death!” 67 Then they spit in his face and beat him with their fists, and some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who hit you?”
(Leviticus 24:16, Isaiah 50:6, John 10:33, 19:7)

After Jesus declared His divinity and called the leaders of His people to repent, believe, and worship, they exploded in rage. They burst out in anger and sentenced Him to death for what they called “blasphemy,” treating Him with much contempt.

According to their law, the Jews were required to strike a blasphemer immediately, thus symbolizing that they did not partake of his fault but rejected it. Some of them mocked Him, calling Him “Prophet” and asking Him to prophecy without really believing in Him.

Are you better than the representatives of the Jewish nation in the Sanhedrin? Do you admit that the man Jesus is Christ the Savior, the Son of the living God? Or do you reject His divinity and redemption? Beware! Your answer decides your destiny in eternity.

PRAYER: We thank You Lord Jesus Christ, because You kept silent before the Sanhedrin a long time, and then You declared to them Your full glory in one sentence. We worship You, believe, and confess that You are the Son of the living God, our Lord and Savior. You are sitting on the right hand of Your Father and are coming in the clouds of heaven to judge the living and the dead. All authority has been given to You in heaven and on earth. Fill our hearts with the obedience of faith so that we tell our friends and neighbors Your name and that Your kingdom comes for the glory of God, the Father.

QUESTION:

  1. What is the meaning of the one sentence that Jesus said before the Sanhedrin?
