Mark - Who is Christ?
A Bible Study Course on the Gospel of Christ according to MARK
PART 7 - Jesus' Olivet Discourse About the Future of Jerusalem and the end of the World (Mark 13:1-37)

7. The Coming of Christ, the End of History (Mark 13:24-27)

MARK 13:24-27
24 But in those days, after that oppression, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, 25 the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. 26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 Then he will send out his angels, and will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the sky.

Jesus lives. He sits at the right hand of the Father expecting that his followers have preached the power of his Spirit all around the world, prevailing with their faithfulness over the temptations and troubles of their life in the last days.

Christ longs for his church much more than the bridegroom thinks of his bride. All his thoughts, plans, and hopes are centered on it. His love is divine and everlasting. It never fails.

On earth, the antichrist will flame up with rage, supposing that he has wiped out the church of Christ. Yet, she lives. Even if faithful individuals die, they will remain living, for whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against the church of Christ.

It appears from the prophecies that the antichrist, in his pride, wants to fight God and his Son. He will probably try to shake the stars with a huge bomb, and consume the hosts of the spirits with spaceships that he may not only destroy the earth, but also fill space with pieces of exploded stars and dust, which will cover the face of the sun like a fearful ghost.

Then cold, ice, darkness, storms, starvation, and despair will attack our ruined world, and the whole earth may be staggered as a drunkard so that the stars will appear as if they were swimming and falling.

God has given up those who are not prepared to submit to him to bring about their destruction. Man creates his torture and judgment by himself.

Yet, in the greatest tribulation, when evil reaches its highest point, Christ will come to the world, and every eye will see him. As he had already ascended from the earth to his Father, overcoming the force of gravity, so he will come back visible to all eyes of men, like the explosion of a great dazzling thunderbolt, with an excess of light above the brightness of the sun, shining from the east to the west, and lighting up even the dark side of the earth.

His coming will shake the universe. The Creator will come in judgment, to call all to account. The devils will tremble at the approach of judgment day, and those who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will be fearful and call on the mountains to fall on them, or hide in the darkest caves to flee from the coming face of God.

Jesus will come with great power and glory. All authority has been given to him in heaven and on earth. A multitude of the heavenly host will accompany him, for by his coming, eternity will cause a temporal disturbance on our earth. The rays of the glory of the Son of God will condemn all men without words, for they did not purify themselves with the blood of Christ beforehand. The names of the rays of his glory are truth, holiness, love, abstinence, meekness, faith, humility, mercy, and patience.

Jesus himself is the measure of our judgment, and his love constitutes heaven. No one is righteous before him, except those who are justified by his blood, and live in his Spirit.

Christ will not come as a Judge in the first place, but as the Son of Man, and the High Priest who was tempted as we are, filled with mercy for our weaknesses. His glory as the Son of God will bring comfort. He is truly the Son of Man with the marks of the cross in his hands and feet. His appearing will bring comfort, peace, joy, and praise in the church.

He knows every believer by name, for he had revealed through his Spirit: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine.” He will send out ten thousands of his angels to gather those who are called by their names. The great separation will appear at the coming of Christ. Those who are regenerated are alive. Death could not put them to death. The power of the truth of the rays of the glory of God could not consume them. The fruits of the Spirit appear in them, and they will come to the Lord who draws them to him.

Read the Gospel of Matthew (25:31-42) that you may know, in detail, what will happen at the coming of Christ, and examine yourself in the light of these verses. Where are you man? What is your own situation? Will you perish in your disobedience, or are you invited to the supper of the great Lamb of God?

What great joy! The angels will not gather the children of God only from the ends of the earth, but also from all parts of heaven, out of whom are the dead in the Lord, for they will live to Jesus. Then we will see Paul, Peter, John, and the evangelist Mark, and we will wonder who came from the Lord and who did not. The elect are not the great, the rich, the clever, and the famous. However, the Lord’s beatitudes will appear word by word. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

PRAYER: Come O Lord Jesus. We wish to see you, because you died for us, and rose to justify us. Teach us thankfulness, love, and praise that we may be worthy of meeting you. Help us in the last days not to lose the hope of your coming, when the earth declines, fuel and water become scarce, and the sun loses its heat. You are the light of our life. Sanctify us that we may become servants to all, as you gave your life to serve sinners. Thank you for your presence with us in the power of the Holy Spirit. Come O Lord Jesus, make your church complete, and guide us to a powerful testimony that the dead in sins may rise to your life, and be prepared to meet you. Amen.
