8. The Servants of God Will Serve Him and See His Face (Revelation 22:3-5)

There Will be no More Night: John confirmed once again that there will be cosmic revolutions in New Jerusalem. We should not make the mistake to apply terrestrial standards to the upcoming existence. In the new heaven and on the new earth abide righteousness, holiness, love and truth. No darkness, no injustice, no lie and no uncleanness will be there. As an outward sign of the inward renewal a cosmic change will become visible. The solar system does not exist any longer, sun and moon are not necessary any longer. The LORD God and His Lamb shine brighter than all former heavenly bodies. The glory of the Lord shines upon His servants and through them and enlightens them and makes them lights of the world, as Jesus himself is the light of the world (Matthew 5:14; John 8:12).

The Servants of God Will Reign: When John wrote that the royal priests of God will reign in his new theocracy he did not state therewith that they will dominate and oppress other people. Christ has not forced anybody to believe in him or to obey him. But he has shown everybody his promises and commandments quite plainly so that he may be able to decide his own fate.

Adam and Eve once were to rule over fishes, birds and animals, but not over mankind. They were to preserve the old creation (Genesis 1:26-28). However, through their disobedience they brought death and destruction upon all who were subordinated to them.

Jesus defined the reign of his servants as follows, “You know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28).

Through this guideline and commandment Jesus took his own ministering and his humility as standard and commandment for his followers. He commanded them to become “ministers” and not “masters". Additionally the Lord said, “One is your Master, even Christ; and all you are brothers.” (Matthew 23:8.10). Among brothers all is to be done with love and truth.

The love of Jesus is, however, not softy and shallow, but may become as hard as steel in its truthfulness, as you may see in his woes upon the Pharisees and scribes (Matthew 23:13-33). In order to reign according to the right of Christ and in his love, the ministers of the triune God will be led by the Spirit with great patience so that they are able to carry out the instructions and commandments of their Lord. In doing so the following is effective: Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the “new” earth. (Matthew 5:5).

The service instructions of the Son of God are not effective temporarily and are not arising from prevailing circumstances, for John heard about the servants of God, “They will reign for ever and ever.” “For ever and ever” means “timeless", without an end and without a beginning. The servants of God are his children born through his Spirit, and they are all partakers of his eternity. Only God lives forever and ever. All other things have an origin and are created. When the servants of the threefold Holy One will reign “for ever and ever", then they will do it, because God has given them his inherent characteristic feature: eternity!

If eternity means “aeon” or “period", then the meaning of “from aeon to aeon” (or “forever and ever", respectively) is a passage from one infinite period to another infinite period. Man on earth is limited by space and time and needs for his thinking such auxiliary language means so as to approximate the mystery of eternity. God is not limited by these empirical restrictions. He is not bound to time and lives for ever and ever together with his children. (John15:19; 17:14; 1 John 4:4-6; and other verses).

PRAYER: Father, we worship you, as you are our Father and have allowed us to become your children. We thank you that your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, cleansed us from all our sins and unrighteousness, and we rejoice that the Holy Spirit is the eternal live in us. Please help us to be your happy servants in gratitude for the privilege that you have revealed yourself to us. Please, lead us so as to find those whose names are written in the Book of Life of the Lamb in order to serve them in the name of your beloved Son and not anybody of them miss his right of inheritance. Amen.
