1. Preparations in Heaven (Revelation 8:1-6)

The Seven Archangels and the Sons of Jacob

REVELATION 8:6
6 The seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

The fact that Jesus transferred the carrying out of the trumpet judgments to seven archangels, shows clearly that the recipients of the book of Revelation were, to a notable degree, Jewish and Jewish-Christians, in Hellenistic dominated churches. The Lord wanted to make it clear to them that their protecting, escorting and defending angels, as well as their preserving, leading and guarding angel-princes, would personally introduce and carry out the judgment upon Israel and the entire world!

The destruction of Jerusalem and its temple in the year 70 A.D., and the expulsion of the Old Testament Covenant people from its firmly promised land, left a deep shock among the refugees and Jews, who had been sold as slaves. They have asked themselves since then: Where were the guardian and battle angels of our people? Did our Covenant God forget or abandon us?

The Lamb of God made it clear to them through John: As long as you abhor, disdain and fight against Me and My salvation, even so long will the seven archangels hide their face from you. Following 70 A.D. they will only be to you angels of God and His Lamb’s judgment. John wrestled for the soul of his people. He wanted to lead them in love to repentance. He took away their last hope, the seven angels, as if pulling the rug out from under them, so that they might fall into the hands of the living God and His Lamb. They should crush their pride, confess the sins of their people, and by a daring faith in the Lamb of God be saved.

The Purpose of the Seven Trumpet Judgments: In earlier times when a mail carriage rode into a village the coachman blew on a horn. When army maneuvers took place the staff trumpeter sounded certain signals, which were picked up by other trumpeters. The sounding of taps has more than once pressed lagging soldiers quickly into duty. Trumpet sounds normally signal announcements, warnings, or urgent commands, and are so understood by those who hear them!

The sounding of end-time trumpets in heaven contains warnings and painful punishments that should call forth great convulsions. These trumpet warnings do not yet signify the destruction of the earth. They have the repentance of mankind in view. But man is not prepared to turn around, even after experiencing God's love and good will. The Almighty, therefore, has to compress their living space and deeply shock them, so that they might wake up and realize: We cannot go on the way we have been going!

The trumpet sounds of the archangels proclaim to mankind: Wake up and finally understand the lateness of the hour! In your disregard of God and despising of His commands you resemble the man who saws on the limb he is sitting on. The Creator calls His creation to reflection and repentance, not just lovingly and kindly, but also with punishment designed to lead the disobedient and rebellious into real distress. He wants them to turn back and voluntarily submit to Him.

The Almighty forces no one to repent, but He shakes the earth that it's residents might understand: We are all just God's caretakers! We cannot live without Him. The earth has only been entrusted to us as tenants, and not given to us to own. We remain responsible to the Owner, Lord and Creator of the world. We belong to Him. He made us. If we choose to ignore Him, or mockingly disregard His word, then we live in rebellion against the Almighty and must perish.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, You gave Your only Son's life for our corrupt world, and the inhabitants of our earth reject Your great gift. Only a few accept it. And You have to condemn them because they neglect and reject Your salvation prepared for them. Would that they return, confess their sins, and accept their patient Redeemer.

QUESTION:

  1. What are the purposes of the judgments of trumpets?
