ROMANS - The Lord is our Righteousness
Studies in the Letter of Paul to the Romans
PART 1 - The Righteousness of God Condemns all Sinners and Justifies and Sanctifies all Believers in Christ (Romans 1:18 - 8:39)
C - Justification Means a New Relationship with God and Men (Romans 5:1-21)

2. The Resurrected Christ Fulfills his Righteousness in us (Romans 5:6-11)

ROMANS 5:6-8
6 For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die. 8 But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

After the revelation of God’s wrath and righteous judgment, Paul guides us to sincere repentance, and brokenness of ego that we may be prepared to accept justification by faith, lay hold of the great hope, and continue in the faithful love of God. Although we have entered into this salvation, we also need to remember our past that we may not become haughty.

All spiritual gifts, peace, grace, love, purification, faith, hope, and patience are not brought forth by ourselves, nor by our human powers. They are a result of the death of Jesus, who gave his life not for his beloved brothers, but for the ungodly, among whom God sees us. Man is like a bomb of evil. He corrupts not only himself, but also others. Thus, Christ loved us and died for us.

From this humility, we see the great love of God. Rarely do we find anyone willing to sacrifice his own comfort, time, wealth, and ease, or his life, to advance the welfare of his sick brother. Perhaps someone would give his life for his homeland, or his children, or a mother would sacrifice her life for her children, but nobody would be prepared to give his life for criminals and rejected enemies, except God.

This principle constitutes the climax of our faith. While we were disobedient enemies of God, the Holy One loved us. He associated with the sinners, in his Son, and died as atonement for the sins of his murderers. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. From this word of Christ, we find that he called his enemies, “his friends”, because he loved all, even to death.

The love of God for us is so great that he forgave our sins on the cross before we sinned, and even before we were born. Therefore, we do not need to make any efforts to justify ourselves, but need only to accept the divine grace, and believe that we have been justified, and then the power of Jesus’ salvation will be materialized in us.

ROMANS 5:9-11
9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God’s wrath through him. 10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life. 11 Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Now, rejoice and leap for joy! For we have become justified before God because of our faith union with Christ. The devil has no right to complain against us. The blood of Christ cleanses us both in body and in soul. This new state will last forever, because the intercession of Jesus will save us from the wrath of God on the Day of Judgment.

Paul deepens us in the certain truth of salvation with the following meanings:

First: We were reconciled to God at a time when we lived in enmity and rebellion toward him. This reconciliation was without our agreement, and without payment of the cost. In fact, we were unable and unworthy to begin this reconciliation, which is a mere gift of grace. This reconciliation only became possible through the Son of God, who became incarnate and died for us.

Second: If the death of Jesus caused such changing results, how much more will the life of the living Christ achieve salvation! Now that we have willfully and determinedly been reconciled to God, we want to do his will with all our hearts that his power may work in us. Thus, eternal life, which is nothing but the life of Christ himself, has come to us through our faith in the Lamb of God, who is the Holy Spirit, the essence of God’s love. These divine verses establish peace, gladness, tranquility, and praise in our hearts. The Lord’s Spirit is the guarantee of our glorious future, for whoever abides in love, abides in God and God in him.

Third: Thus, Paul had courage to ascend to such a height of glory as to say, “We also rejoice in God”, which means that the Holy One himself dwells in us, and we abide in him, for we have not only been reconciled to him, but the Holy Spirit, who is God himself, has made our bodies a temple for the Godhead. Do you rejoice at the presence of God in you? Become a broken man, regard yourself as nothing, worship your Lord, and see the remarkable rank to which the death of Christ has raised you.

PRAYER: We kneel before the power of love proclaimed in the crucified Jesus, and we deliver our bodies to the motives of divine love, which includes us who are of a debased mind. We do not want to think of ourselves, but to sink into the sea of divine love.

QUESTION:

  1. How did the love of God appear?
