REVELATION - Behold, I am Coming Soon
Studies in the Book of Revelation
BOOK 7 - YES, I AM COMING SOON! (REVELATION 19:11 - 22-21)
PART 7.4 - THE LAST JUDGMENT (REVELATION 20:11-15)

1. The Judgment of the World According to the Book of Revelation (Revelation 20:11)

REVELATION 20:11
11 I saw a great white throne, and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. There was found no place for them.

We do not know whether by means of the fiery storm against Satan and his innumerable followers the whole earth will burn and the heavens pass away with a great noise and the elements of the earth melt with fervent heat, as it is put in another text (2 Peter 3:7.10; see also Isaiah 24:19-20; Matthew 24:29). John is silent in the first instance about it. However, he indicates cosmic changes of a very great extend, i.e. an interplanetary catastrophe. Light, air and water will disappear. Death will gather everybody who is not born again. Only what is borne of God, will overcome the world and live in eternity.

We should become familiar with the fact that the world known to us will perish completely. All what seems to be worthy and necessary for us, will disappear. All men, animals and plants will perish and all mountains be atomized. Therefore John states, “Do not love the world, neither the things that are in the world. ...And the world passes away, and the lust thereof; but he who does the will of God abides forever". (1 John 2:15.17)

The Last Judgment of the Lamb of God consists according to the Book of Revelation of several stages:

  • At first Antichrist and his followers will be judged and thrown into the lake of fire.
  • Then, Satan and the army that was mobilized by him will be destroyed.
  • Afterwards, everybody will be judged who does not rest in Jesus.
  • Finally, death and his realm will be destroyed.

John, the Evangelist, saw in a short vision the Last Judgment of which men and demons tremble. This all decisive event is called in Koran besides other terms “the day of resurrection", “the day of reckoning", “the day of judgment", and “the day of religion", because this “day” summarizes law and grace, spiritual fruit and hardened hearts. In this trial the separation between unrighteous and sanctified men is executed. This court is the court of ultimate resort for all beings between heaven and earth (Hebrews 10:25b-31).

First of all John saw a great white throne that was more splendid than all thrones being seen as yet. Its white color indicates the spotless righteousness and holiness of the judge and his angels. No appeal can stop the progress of this judgment. Its adjudication and the sentences are faultless, righteous and holy.

Upon the throne sat “one” in superiority, majesty, judicial authority and radiant glory (Revelation 1:13-16; 4:2-5 and other verses). It left the patriarch speechless. He was not able to pronounce the name of the judge, even though he had clearly borne witness of him before (John 5:22.27; cf. Daniel 7:13-14; Matthew 25:31-46; Acts 10:42 and other verses) and was during his ministry on earth particularly close to him: John was the disciple “whom Jesus loved” and who as a young fellow sometimes fall asleep while leaning on the bosom of his Lord (John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7.20). The glory of the Son of man, Jesus, exceeded, however, the scope of human comprehension.

Some expositors think that the one upon the white throne is meant for God, the creator and absolute ruler, Father of Jesus Christ. But that is inconsistent with the statements of Jesus in the gospel. The Father has given to His Son all authority in heaven and on earth (Daniel 7:14; Matthew 28:18; Revelation 5:1-12; and other verses), including the Last Judgment (Matthew 19:28; 25:31; John 5:22.27; 6:39; Acts 10:42 and other verses). Therefore we can't help but confess, ‘The judge is our Savior!’ The holy one is our redeemer! The one sitting on the throne is the risen crucified one! He is judging in perfect accordance with His Father according to his former witness, “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me", (John 5:30; 6:38-40). Jesus and His Father are one; whoever has seen the Son, has seen the Father (John 10:30; 14:9-10; 17:21-23 and other verses). Jesus is sitting with His father on the throne (Revelation 3:21), and both are reigning and judging in perfect unity (in oneness) on the Last Day.

In his powerful report John writes, “From his face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them” (Revelation 20:11). From the judge upon the white throne great power proceeded. The core of the name 'Elohim' (God) is El, what means “power". Our God is the original power of the existence. Christ said to his disciples, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8). For this reason are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit the concentrated power of eternity. Therefore, a supernatural spiritual power is coming forth from the eyes of the judge on the white throne. At first the corrupted earth starts leaving the orbit around the sun hasty, then all fixed stars and galaxies will follow. The creation is fleeing from the face of its creator, as all beings had been depraved and corrupted under the dominion of the prince of this world. In this context the dramatic prophesies of Isaiah, Peter and Jesus himself will be fulfilled (Isaiah 24:19-20; Matthew 24:29; 2 Peter 3:10 and other verses). “Heaven and earth will pass away”, this had the Lord prophesied unemotionally (Matthew 24:35; see also Isaiah 51:6). The earth will be completely destroyed so that it will be not found even any atomic dust of it in the infinite universe.

After this cosmic catastrophe nothing remains any longer than man and his creator who is at the same time his redeemer and judge. Nobody can hide from him. Nobody can stand on his possession and his “rights". Nothing will be in existence but God and we! The end of the world is closer than we are aware of.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, You are the everlasting life. Free us from our hopes to remain in our earthly nature that we may live willingly in the everlasting life freely granted to the followers of Christ. Purify us completely with His precious blood so that no inequity can separate us from the eternal Judge, but we abide in His grace with those who trust in Him. Amen.

QUESTIONS:

  1. How does the Book of Revelation explain the end of the universe?
  2. How should you prepare yourself for the passing away of our earth?
