And yet I show you a more excellent way. 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become as sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophecy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 14:1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

and do not take Your
Holy Spirit
from me,
Restore to me the joy
of your salvation,

(A prayer of David in Psalm 51:10-12)

Observation: In principal, it is a mistake to divide the person and work of the Holy Spirit into different categories, for He maintains, in all His titles and names, absolute unity. Nevertheless, due to the limitations of human understanding, the various titles and names of the Holy Spirit can help us to arrive at a better understanding. They must, however, continually be seen in the light of a spiritual unity.

Perhaps some readers might miss reports of attractive and powerful spiritual manifestations in our time, which maintain to be from the Holy Spirit. Such reporting, however, would go beyond the scope of this book, which desires to positively show who the Holy Spirit is and what He does, as revealed in the Bible.

One can recognize the true Spirit of God by the fact that He never glorifies Himself or the one in whom He dwells, but only Christ and His blood. This Spirit leads us to the recognition of God the Father and God the Son. At the same time, He directs us to repentance, while destroying our pride. He encourages us to firm faith, true love, and patient hope, so that the picture of Christ in us will be clearly seen. He leads us to prayer and worship, to various church ministries, and to world evangelism. He prepares us for Christ´s return.

Whoever propagates a spirit other than the true Spirit of Jesus stands in danger of being misled into the sensationalism of the miracle seeking masses. In the end time, the Antichrist and his prophet will show his cleverness in just this way (Math. 24:24,25; 2 Thes. 2:9; Rev. 13:13). The Spirit of Jesus, however, manifests Himself in meekness and humility, revealing a sacrificial love that is willing to bear and forgive even enemies and opponents. To the quiet and peaceful followers of Christ the Spirit can give, in addition to these, even special gifts (1 Cor. 12-14), that serve to build up the church. Let us not forget the words of Math. 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

But you shall
receive power
when the
Holy Spirit has come
upon you;
and you shall be
witnesses unto
Me.

The Apostolic Creed

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and the life everlasting.
The explanation given by Dr. Martin Luther in the Small Catechism reads:

I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or
choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord,
or come to Him.
But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel,
enlightened me with his gifts,
sanctified and kept me in the true faith.
In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens,
and sanctifies the whole Christian Church
on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ
in the one true faith. In the Christian
Church he daily and fully forgives all sins to
me and all believers. On the last day
he will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.
This is most certainly true.

Whoever asks: “Did not the Lord Jesus on the cross wipe away my sin and the sin of the world? Why, then, must the Holy Spirit still daily and fully forgive me of my sins? The answer is: On the cross Jesus Christ bore the sins of all men and ultimately reconciled the world with God through His death of atonement. This objective fact of salvation, however, must be realized in us through our faith. The Holy Spirit fulfills in us the subjective appropriation of salvation and makes us fully aware of the forgiveness of our sins. His merciful dealing includes His indwelling us as the gift of eternal life. Without Him we remain spiritually dead in our sins.
