7. Another Voice From Heaven Calls God's People to Abandon Babylon (Revelation 18:4-5)

A Mountain of Sin That Reaches to Heaven (v 5): The sins of ancient Babylon were directed both against the first tablet of the law, God personally, as well as the second tablet, against humanity. The sins of Babylon multiplied with amazing speed. The mountain of compressed sin of this city reached to heaven. The earlier inhabitants had planned to build a ziggurat, a huge tower, whose height would reach to the “gate of God”. In the end what came out was an obvious mountain of sin (comp. Revelation 18:5).

God had to act! His patience was finished! His warnings had availed little. All who had committed sin remained a slave to their sin (John 8:34; 2 Peter 2:19). Today, too, whoever does not receive Jesus as his Savior and allow himself to be changed by Him, falls deeper and deeper into guilt and shame.

The bombing of the great cities of Europe during WW II, the terrible earthquakes in Turkey and in China, as well as the collapse of the two World Trade Center buildings in New York were all serious warnings of the patient God, and were intended to bring about quick repentance from the citizens of these villages and great cities. Child pornography, the rape of young girls and the unrighteousness done to women and children in war and terrorism cries out to heaven. Hundreds of thousands of babies and children die each year in the third world, while in high-tech countries the excess production of milk and food is destroyed to keep prices from falling. Billions of dollars are spent in East and West each year for armament. With these sums of money thousands of schools and hospitals could be built in Africa and Asia.

In the spiritual realm the worship of Satan in the black mass continues to spread. Indian cults whirl over television screens and in World Cup football matches spirits and demons are implored to bring about victory for the national team and defeat for the opponent. Knowledge of the true God, of the father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, is neglected, ridiculed, and even from time to time intentionally impeded. The sin of mankind again reaches to heaven. Babylon is everywhere. A bishop said: “If we could see with our own eyes the sin that is committed in one night in our state's capital city we would go crazy!” God alone possesses the vigor of patience needed to bear our sins, in the hope that we will repent and renounce our arrogance. The building of the tower of Babel does not just happen today in our great cities, with all of our fascinating skyscrapers. Much more, the sins of lovelessness, reaching to heaven, are piling up in every village. How much longer will the Lord give us the capacity to repent?

PRAYER: Our Father in heaven, please forgive us our lovelessness, our inclination to rest, and our many impurities. Give us and our people sincere repentance from all evil doings, empty rituals in which the living Lord in not present, and unclean relationships, that Your punishments for educating us may not be changed into destructive judgments. Amen.

QUESTION.

  1. Which of our and of our people's sins have piled up sky high?
