2. The Seven Trumpet Judgments (Revelation 8:7 - 9:21)

REVELATION 9:17-19
17 Thus I saw the horses in the vision, and those who sat on them, having breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of lions. Out of their mouths proceed fire, smoke, and sulfur. 18 By these three plagues were one third of mankind killed: by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur, which proceeded out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths, and in their tails. For their tails are like serpents, and have heads, and with them they harm.

The Approach of the Army of Two Million: The millions of battle horses that John saw charging forth in his vision are not normal horses. They have heads like lions, which demonstrates their power. They have snake tails with heads to do harm, demonstrating their satanic origin. Fire goes forth from their mouths, like we read of in dragon legends. Following the fire there is burning smoke and a hideous smell, like the smell from sulfur. These signs resemble the judgment over Sodom and Gomorrah where God's wrath annihilated the body, mind and soul of the depraved (Genesis 19:24, 28; Revelation 9:2; 18:9).

The battle horses of this vision remind of modern war tanks, with fire and smoke proceeding from their barrels and openings. Their long cannon barrels often have on their ends a reinforcement to protect the munitions or to diminish the roar of detonation, which could resemble the snake heads in the vision.

The riders on the horses wear breastplates of fiery red, sulfur yellow or hyacinth blue, to distinguish the armies of the nations from each other. The red danger from the Communistic countries and yellow danger from China were often discussed in the last century. The blue danger arises perhaps from syncretistic minded Hindus, fanatic Muslims and superficial humanists, who naively think they can classify Jesus into their system of faith and thought.

In the event that India, Russia and China, together with the Muslims of the earth, join together in a pact against Israel and the arrogant West, something hotly debated in India during the crisis in Kosovo, an army of two hundred million would become thoroughly imaginable. China today has 1,3 billion residents, India more than a billion, Russia 200 million, and the Muslims comprise 1,4 billion. The hatred of these peoples against the U.S.A., Israel and their friends can no longer be logically fathomed.

Despite these possibilities, we should not fix our attention on the nations and their armies. We should much more, in conscientious amazement, realize that the host of angels in heaven is even greater. We stand in the middle of a battle between light and darkness, between the followers of Satan, and the followers of Christ (Daniel 9:21; 10:10-21; Revelation 5:11). Paul assures us that some of our problems and trials arise from the attacks of evil spirits under heaven, and commands us to put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-20). This command applies to all who are bound to Christ, especially in the last days.

In the vision of the sixth trumpet judgment and the second cry of woe it is once again revealed that a third of mankind will be killed in a future war. The malice and moral perversion of the world population must become unbearably great in God's eyes for Him to withdraw His protective hand from His beloved creation, allowing them to fall prey to hate-filled demons! Our capacity for sympathy quickly dulls in view of the massive holocaust, so that we only hear numbers, and no longer think of the individual destinies involved. How many mothers will no longer be able to cry because of dread? How many children's eyes will be opened wide because of horror? How many men will sob in hopelessness and despair?

PRAYER: Our Father in heaven, we are ashamed to lift up our eyes to You because the sins of mankind run in our blood too, but we pray humbly to You because Your beloved Son took away the sin of the world, and by His death for us, He accomplished the atonement for us indeed. Save our friends, our relatives, and the people of the Middle East, who hunger for Your righteousness. You are greater and stronger than all wars.

QUESTION:

  1. What is God's purpose of the judgments of the seven trumpets?
