e) The Net Cast Into the Sea of Peoples (Matthew 13:47-53)

MATTHEW 13:47-50
47 Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet, that was cast into the sea, and gathered some fish of every kind, 48 which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach. They sat down, and gathered the good into containers, but the bad they threw away. 49 So will it be in the end of the world. The angels will come forth, and separate the wicked from among the righteous, 50 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.”
(Matthew 22:9-10; 25:32)

Some of the disciples were fishermen. They understood what their Master meant when he explained their new job by using a fishing parable. They had to cast the net of His word into the sea of their nation and all nations to fish many to Christ. The church is made up of those who have been called from all generations, races, and time periods.

There is a time coming when the gospel will have fulfilled that for which it was sent, and we are sure it shall not return void (Isaiah 55:11). The net is now being filled. Sometimes it fills faster than at other times, but still it fills and will be drawn to shore when “the mystery of God is finished” (Revelation 10:7).

When the net is full and drawn to the shore, there shall be a separation between the good and bad that were gathered in it. Hypocrites and true Christians shall then be parted. The good shall be gathered into valuable vessels, which are carefully kept, but the bad shall be cast away as vile and unprofitable. While the net is in the sea, it is not known what is in it. The fishermen themselves cannot distinguish. But they carefully draw it to the shore for the sake of the good that is in it. Such is God’s care for the visible church, and such should ministers’ concern be for those under their charge, though there will be both good and bad.

Jesus was determined that they would not work alone, but would help one another to draw the net. No one can draw the many fish from the sea of nations by their self. Now Christ invites you to cast, with us and with all your friends in your church, the net of the Word of God into your surroundings, that you may draw many of your fellow citizens to Jesus. Pray for them, tell them about the Savior, invite them into your meetings, circulate spiritual publications, and let us work together in the Lord’s service. Do you pray for those that read the gospel and do not understand it? Associate with them through your prayers that they may find in the gospel the true Christ and eternal life.

The Lord is calling you to win the souls, not to judge them. Therefore accept the respectful and the educated and do not reject the poor and the agitator, for judgment is entrusted to Christ, the just Judge. Let it be known to you that your service will put you face to face with different categories of people – righteous and wicked, old schools and liberated, old and young, smart and stupid, poor and rich, civilized and uncivilized, citizens and foreigners, sick and healthy. Offer them all the Word of God without distinction, and proclaim the gospel of salvation to those around you. Do not be lazy, go and work energetically as long as it is day light. Do not decide in your service who is the wicked or the good one. The Lord’s angels shall cast away the hypocrites, and then take many repentant sinners to heaven because they cling to Christ in faith.

Once there was a young man who did not believe in hell. Yet during the war, he threw himself to the ground when bombs were thrown, and he gnashed his teeth while the flames destroyed everything around him. He suddenly recognized the possibility of a hell of everlasting flames. Do you love those that are lost around you, and long to save them that they may not be consumed at the last judgment? If not, you have no love and are deserving of hell.

PRAYER: Jesus, You have called us to become blessing to men, but we don’t know how to serve them, because we are often shy when we want to preach and proclaim salvation to people. Forgive us, Lord, our slow performance, and lead us with those who obey You to serve those whom You have loved and desired to bring over to You. Inspire us with offering Your call to them that they may repent, turn back, come into the kingdom of love, and receive eternal life before they die.

QUESTION:

  1. Who are those that Christ wants you to win to His kingdom?
